Mzansi Artists Claim Grammy Glory
South African musicians Zakes Bantwini, Wouter Kellerman and Nomcebo Zikode received a Grammy Award for their hit single, “Bayethe”, on Sunday, 5 February.
The trio were given the Best Global Music Performance award in the Global Music category, which also featured legendary African stars Burna Boy, Matt B, Aroof Aftab, Anoushka Shankar and Rocky Dawuni.
A memorable night for many, the 65th annual awards ceremony took place at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena in California. Internationally recognised Mzansi comedian Trevor Noah ensured there was smooth sailing for the evening with his finely-tuned hosting skills.
Flautist Kellerman took to the stage to give thanks for the award, before adding: “Collaborations like these bring out the best in all of the music traditions that bring so much richness to global music. It’s an amazing adventure to be part of something so special.”
“This moment right here just proves to anybody who’s in Africa and affirms that every dream is valid,” producer Bantwini added with gusto.
By their side, singer Zikode added: “This is a career highlight for all of us, and it just goes to show that South African talent can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with talent from all around the world.”
